Pepsi Ice Cucumber

They are now selling Pepsi Ice Cucumber in Japan. Yup, cucumber! One review says it does not taste like a green salad (phew) but instead, it tastes very sweet with a light aftertaste of honeydew melon. I don't think it will be available here in Singapore. Love to give it a try.

Turkish Batman and Robin

YouTube Link

If you thought the old Batman series starring Adam West was cheesy, wait till you watch this clip of a Turkish production of Batman and Robin. It's a little slow in the beginning but the action picks up somewhere in the middle of the clip. I just don't understand why they had to remove their capes though. They already look silly - minus the cape, they look even sillier!

Wired Magazine's Transformers Story

Director Michael Bay (I love you Michael Bay!) has posted a Wired Magazine story of Transformers on his website. Wired Magazine is also featuring Optimus Prime on its cover. From Michael Bay:

... Bay says that weight-mass orthodoxy informed the decision to make Prime a hog-nosed semi instead of the flat-front model from the cartoon, which, he says, would have yielded only 23 feet of robot height. (He wanted Prime to stand at least 30 feet tall.) He also insists that it was these practicalities — and not his movie's partnership with Chevy — behind his heretical decision to convert cuddly Bumblebee into a bitchin' Camaro. Physics also informed the decision to make Megatron, originally a pistol, into a jet; and Frenzy, the beloved Decepticon cassette tape, is now a shiny boom box. But other alterations were simply Bay's prerogative. Optimus Prime now boasts bright orange cholo flames and — much to fans' horror — lips. "I'm the director. I make my own decisions. I like to paint the house green, even when everyone says it's got to be white."

Hotdog Challenge: Kobayashi vs Giant Bear

YouTube Link

Previously I blogged about Japanese eating legend Takeru Kobayashi suffering a serious jaw injury during his training. Here is a video of him battling a bear in a hotdog eating competition.

Latest news is that despite his jaw injury, he vowed to defend his world famous US title at the annual July 4 Nathan's Famous hot-dog eating event on New York's Coney Island. From Yahoo News:
"I want to defend my title by breaking the world record. My condition is not perfect, but I will do whatever I can to move my jaw," the 29-year-old said in a Japanese television interview before setting off.

"It's getting better gradually. I don't know how badly my jaw is damaged. That's what scares me," he said.

Kobayashi, who has become a celebrity in Japan and the United States, had already halted his competitive eating for several months after his mother's death earlier this year.

But he said he still wanted to go to the competition in New York.

"I want to be the pride of my mother," he said in a blog entry posted Sunday.
It will be interesting to see how he is going to defend his title. He cannot even open his mouth wide enough to fit in two fingers with the injury, so how on earth is he going to gobble up those hotdogs?

Singapore Gala Premiere of Transformers

tformers3

Last night, I attended the Singapore Gala Premiere of the new Transformers movie at The Cathay. Before I write any further, here are the 5 things that you people should know:

1) Transformers is so far the best movie this year!
2) Megan Fox is a babe! No wait. She is a goddess!
3) The Transformers robots look so awesomely real that I really believe that they exist.
4) Shia LaBeouf is destined to be a big, big name actor.
5) And err, yes, I did scream and shout with excitement throughout the movie.

Ok. Let's start with the pictures taken last night.

tformers2

That's the pamphlet containing tickets to the Gala Premiere.

tformers5

tformers6

The giant heads of Megatron and Optimus Prime greet the guests at the Premiere.

tformers7

That's Optimus and me!

Ok, now to the review. The movie is about giant robots making a big mess on Earth. The good guys are the Autobots led by their leader, Optimus Prime. The bad guys are the Decepticons, led by Megatron. They fight. They shoot rockets, bullets, bombs. They try to kill each other. Some are really killed in the end. I won't tell who. Ok now you guys should just go watch the movie. Ha!

Seriously, Transformers is the best movie so far this year. It's a movie that I think even the girls would enjoy watching. It is highly entertaining from start to finish - very rare for a movie nowadays. Credit to the writers. I was worried that the script for the movie would be poor but I was surprised that it turned out to be much, much better that I expected. Lots of humorous moments too.

The CGI was brilliant - the best I've seen in a movie. Like I said earlier, the robots look damn real. The way they transformed into their vehicle modes is awesome. I have never seen anything like it before. Totally breathtaking. Makes you want a real Transformer as a buddy.

There are so many moments in the film that is worth mentioning but there's one that I like the best. That's the part when Optimus Prime said to Megatron, "One shall stand and one shall fall." Brilliant! That's the same line that was said during the 1986 Transformers animated film. What a classic! I bet the writers included that line to pay homage to it.

The biggest credit has got to go to director Michael Bay. Oh boy, did he prove the doubters wrong - that he IS the right person for the job. His directing was of the highest quality. I even shouted, "I love you Michael Bay!" once the film ended. Hehehe.

Now, I can't wait for Transformers 2. I'm very sure there is a sequel coming. Till then...

Transform and roll out!

History of Dutch Comics

Lambiek.net has a good write-up on the history of Dutch comics. Did you know that the German invasion and occupation of Holland during World War II had a big impact on Dutch comics? All Dutch comic artists had to join a "Chamber of Culture" which forbids them from criticizing or ridiculing the German regime. American comics were also prohibited in Holland during that period.

Transformers Singapore Gala Premiere tonight!

I was surfing a few forums and found this post by a gal who wants to buy a pair of tickets to the Transformers Gala Premiere for $60! From ohgenki:
Urgently seeking for 1 pair of Transformers Gala Premiere Tickets showing on 27th June at The Cathay. Willing to pay up to 60bucks. Please PM or email poonweilin@hotmail.com

thanks!
So if any of you want to make $60, you can sell your tickets to her. I won't be selling mine. Yup, that's right. I will be at the Transformers Gala Premiere at The Cathay tonight! I will take some pictures and post a review of the movie tomorrow. Damn, I'm so excited. I have to make sure that I don't scream in the cinema every time a Transformer appears on screen. But then again? Who cares. SCREAMS!

I'm also thinking if I should attend the Gala wearing the Optimus Prime voice changing helmet. I saw it at Toys R Us recently. It looks damn cool man. Here's a video of the helmet in action:

YouTube Link

I've always wanted to walk the streets as Optimus Prime. Hehe. And talking about the helmet, I thought this is funny. From the Hasbro Optimus Prime Helmet product page:
The ultimate headgear for any OPTIMUS PRIME fan, strap on this awesome helmet and rule the galaxy — or your living room! — with awesome electronic features! Three different modes let you make your voice sound like a robot, hear conversion sounds of OPTIMUS PRIME changing from a truck to a robot and back again, or hear OPTIMUS PRIME movie battle phrases like, “I am OPTIMUS PRIME!” “The DECEPTICONS must be stopped!” and three more! Easy-to-adjust straps allow you to fit the helmet comfortably on your head.

Adjusts to fit head sizes ages 5 through adult.

3 AA Batteries Included

CAUTION: This is not a protective Device
"This is not a protective device." Hahaha! Now, which stupid motorist will wear this as a helmet?

Update: Pics of the Gala Premiere plus review of the movie here.

Australia's "Speeding. No-one Thinks Big of You" Campaign

You've got to give it to the Aussies when coming up with memorable advertising campaigns. Remember their "So where the bloody hell are you?" ads to promote Australia? Now, the Aussies have another campaign that is equally "interesting". The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) of New South Wales have launched an ad campaign to curb speeding among young male drivers. From BBC:
The series of TV ads shows women shaking their little finger - a gesture used to symbolise a small penis - as speeding male motorists race past...

The new ads include one young driver revving his engine and rushing through traffic lights in front of two young women and another racing past a female pedestrian.

After both incidents the women wave their little fingers in slow motion with knowing glances.

"We will do what we feel we have to, to get the message through," Mr Whelan said.
I don't think using the "small penis gesture" for guys who speed will work. It's just plain stupid. Watch the ad here (flash).

Japanese eating legend suffers jaw injury

Poor Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese dude - known for his hot dog eating ability - looks like he will retire because of an injury to his jaw. From FOX Sports:
The Japanese eating legend was diagnosed with jaw arthritis and can barely open his mouth. In an entry on his blog entitled "Occupational hazard,'' Kobayashi said: "My jaw refused to fight any more.''

"I feel ashamed that I couldn't notice the alarm bells set off by my own body,'' he said. "But with the goal to win another title with a new record, I couldn't stop my training so close to the competition.

"I was continuing my training and bearing with the pain but finally I destroyed my jaw.''

Kobayashi, 29, set his first world record as a rookie in the Nathan's Famous contest in 2001. He ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes, nearly doubling the previous record. He upped the ante last year with 53¾.
Remember kids, don't eat so many hotdogs at one go aye. Even the professionals can injure themselves doing it.

Robert Scoble and IZ Reloaded

I'm no Robert Scoble but to be mentioned in the same story as him is a great honour! From The Daniel Richard Blog:
Bloggers too, are now increasingly being hired by companies to be their Brand Ambassadors.

One thing that is in common for such practice to be accepted by the public is that the companies (and now, bloggers) would disclose the fact that sponsorship deals have been made by both parties and that the individuals are considered a Brand Ambassador, or are being endorsed by the companies and businesses.

Robert Scoble mentioned that he was hired by Microsoft in 2003 and was paid to be associated with them.

Popular Singapore blog (http://izreloaded.blogspot.com) is another great example of as the blogger is now being endorsed with a whole range of apparels by a new local high-street fashion shop San Street.

Both of them did disclose the fact that they are being paid and rewarded by the companies they are associated with, and the readers are happy to be informed of the news.

Vending Machine Red: Japan's robot superhero!

YouTube Link

I have no idea if this is made for a TV series, a Coca Cola advertising campaign or if it's homemade, just for fun but Vending Machine Red looks like a kick-ass robot superhero - deserving of its own full length TV episode! In this short clip, Vending Machine Red tries to pay a visit to the Japanese parliament building (I think). Watch the entire series here.

Transfomers Timeline: 1984 - Present

Here's everything you ever want to know about the Transformers - where the robots came from and how they evolved from being a popular toyline into one of the most anticipated movies of all time. From Rope of Silicon:
Pre-1984

Hasbro secures the rights to many changing/converting robot brands in Japan and creates the umbrella name The Transformers to unite them. Takara, a Japanese toy manufacturer, saw the potential for future Transformers growth and becomes Hasbro's lead partner in the development of new Transformers products. This successful alliance has lasted for more than 20 years.

1984

The Transformers toy line is launched by Hasbro, with a classic theme song that had kids all over the U.S. reciting the refrain "Robots in Disguise." The 21 toys in the original set include Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Jazz and Starscream. This is the beginning of what has come to be known the "Generation: 1" era.

The Transformers animated television series debuts with a mini-series entitled "More than Meets the Eye." New episodes began in September, airing on Saturday mornings.

Have a retro cartoon weekend!

I just finished watching again the clips from my popular "Watch Intro Clips of popular 1980s Cartoons" post - all 81 of them! I also updated some of the clips that aren't working - Ewoks, The Incredible Hulk, Fraggle Rock and Blackstar. Now I feel really good and I can look forward to a wonderful weekend. Yay!

Rent a room the easy way with RoomsDB.net

My pal Joe told me yesterday that he and his girlfriend are currently looking for a new place to stay. They would like to rent a room, preferably a master bedroom. So he has been busy these few days looking through the classifieds in the newspapers and websites.

Me being the good pal that I am, decided to help him out. Luckily I came across a new website which makes room rental for Singaporeans real easy, so I told him to take a look at the site. "RoomsDB? Never heard of it," he replied. I said why don't he give it a try - he will thank me for it, I assured him.

RoomsDB.net was started by a dude from Germany who was studying in National University of Singapore. He was looking for accommodation here and found out that it was not easy to find a room online because there wasn't a good enough website for that purpose. So he decided to make one himself! That's how singapore.roomsDB.net was born. Now he has a Hong Kong and Taiwan version too.

Using RoomsDB is a breeze. Just type singapore.roomsDB.net into your browser and you'll be greeted by a simple page that loads pretty fast. Then follow these steps and you're on your way to find your ideal room to rent.

roomsdb1

1) Click on "read offers" to check out all the available rooms for rent. The site has a growing list so you may need to narrow down your search.

2) You can narrow down your search by choosing the room type, district and others. For example, my pal wanted a room in Bukit Batok.

roomsdb2

3) In a blink of an eye the site's database shows all the available rooms in Bukit Batok. A "yellow star icon" on the left of each ad means that there's no agent fee involved. Look for the room that interests you and then click the "magnifying glass icon" which will bring you to the ad in detail.

roomsdb3

4) Lastly, you can contact the landlord either by handphone or by sending an email.

That's it. It's that simple!

There are several good points about RoomsDB. It's damn easy to use! This has to be by far the easiest and best room rental website in Singapore. You don't have to register, even when posting an ad! It also has lots of rooms available online - master bedrooms, common rooms in HDBs and condominiums. Some of the rooms are also available without any agent fee.

As for my pal, the latest I heard is that he really enjoyed using the website and he has already contacted a few of the landlords. Great! I hope he does get the room that he wanted. Now, let me see if I have a spare room to rent. Hehe. Gonna make some money!

Go try out RoomsDB and tell your pals about it too aye. Thanks!

(This sponsored post is brought to you by RoomsDB and Advertlets. Joe, bro you have to thank Advertlets if you get the room because without those nice fellas, I wouldn't know of the website in the first place!)

Malaysian sports cable TV viewers get the best deal

In today's The New Paper, writer Lim Say Heng studied the current cable subscription packages of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand and found out that StarHub's offerings seem to lag way behind Malaysia's Astro which has the best sports cable deal in the region. From The New Paper (time sensitve link):
Football lovers in Malaysia have a wider variety to choose from, with J-League, Copa Libertadores and the Cocacaf Gold Cup on offer, in addition to the EPL, Spanish Primera Liga and Italian Serie A.

What's more, the cheapest Astro Family Package (with a mini-package and sports) is about $12 less than StarHub's present minimum sports package of $36.75.

And it offers seven more channels than Singapore's StarHub.

On the surface, the Paket Prime and Paket Sport combination offered by Indonesia's IndoVision seems similar to StarHub's minimum package in terms of price and sports programmes on offer.

The Indonesian broadcaster does not show the Spanish league matches, but offers the Italian Serie A instead, and only a two-dollar difference separates them.

But if you look beyond the sports channels, you will see how IndoVision also trumps StarHub.

IndoVision offers 40 non-sports channels in its Paket Prime, compared to StarHub's offer of a maximum of 14 similar channels at the same price.

What's more, the former offers channels such as Playhouse Disney Channel, Celestial Movies and Fashion TV, which StarHub subscribers have to pay an extra fee of between $4 and $8 per month to add each channel on.
In other words, StarHub SUCKS! Come on Astro. Come to Singapore!

Consumers United Against StarHub Petition

From July, StarHub will increase its cable TV subscription charges. This has made many in Singapore unhappy. Now there's even an online petition to stop StarHub from doing what many say is an unfair treatment to its customers. From Consumers United Against StarHub Price Hike Petition:
Dear Consumers,

This is THE time we, the consumers, stand UNITED and send a strong message to monopolistic businesses and instituitions in Singapore, which constantly subject us to price hikes and unfair business practices.

These are the following reasons on where we stand and why YOU should sign on this petition:

1. Starhub's terms and conditions are unfair and baised against the consumer. We should be allowed avenues to terminate the contract in the event of price hike, without incurring penalties.

2. New price hike should apply to new sign-ups only, and NOT to consumers with existing contracts.

3. Cable TV market should be freed up and made easy for new entrants to provide alternative programme choices ie. via satellite dish, for the consumers. Existing program groups should also be broken down into smaller ones and more pay-per-view programs be introduced.

4. CASE has so far produced disappointing results in cases where it faced-off with big institutions, especially those with governmental links ie. public transport price hike, GST increase, utilities price increase, HDB season parking rate hike etc . Not only are we standing united to pressure Starhub, we are also pressuring CASE to take a stronger stance against these institutions, in view of the long-term interest of Singapore's consumers.
Go sign the petition now!

10 Commandments for Drivers

The Vatican has issued its Ten Commandments for drivers in a document called "Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road". From TIME:
1. You shall not kill.

2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

7. Support the families of accident victims.

8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

10. Feel responsible toward others.
I like number 5 - the part about not to use the car for the occasional sin. You people better remember this aye. Don't make out or have sex in cars. It's a sin! Get a room or something.

Hasbro working on GI Joe and Monopoly movie

Toy company Hasbro is banking on its toys and games to be made to blockbuster movies as it finds new ways to capitalise on its brands. Its Transformers movie is already the most eagerly anticipated movie of 2007 and now we hear that that they will be making GI Joe and maybe even a Monopoly movie. From Transformers LIVE:
Goldner said Hasbro is now working on a movie based on G.I. Joe, and he won't rule out other Hasbro-related movies down the line.

"You could imagine what a Monopoly movie would be like," Goldner said. "It's not a film of a board game. It can be the whole experience people have, and all the iconography of Monopoly."

Independent toy analyst Chris Byrne said the idea could work.

"Monopoly makes a lot more sense than some of the movies we've seen," he said.

Women prefer men who look like dad

Interesting new study reveals that women who were their "daddy's girl", tend to be attracted to men who look like their fathers. From Live Science:
The women who had reported positive relationships with their fathers were much more likely to be attracted to men resembling their fathers, the researchers found. On the other hand, women with bad dad relationships did not find men who looked like their fathers appealing.

“While previous research has suggested this to be the case, these controlled results show for certain that the quality of a daughter’s relationship with her father has an impact on whom she finds attractive,” Boothroyd said in a prepared statement. “It shows our human brains don't simply build prototypes of the ideal face based on those we see around us, rather they build them based on those to whom we have a strongly positive relationship.”
I don't really know how true this is but I think it will be strange to find out a girl likes me because I resemble her dad. Crikey!

Jerry Yang is new CEO of Yahoo!

12 years after co-founding Yahoo, Jerry Yang has been named the new CEO of Yahoo, replacing previous CEO Terry Semel. From Yahoo Press Release:
Jerry Yang said, "I'm delighted to assume this leadership role at the company David Filo and I started 12 years ago. I want to thank Terry for his many contributions to Yahoo! and for giving the company six of its best years. He has been not only a strong leader, but a consummate partner. And, Sue and I look forward to working with him to build on our firm foundation for future success and improved financial performance. Sue has been an integral part of the management team and knows the company incredibly well. She has demonstrated her ability to build successful teams, drive critical partnerships, and lead some of our most important business initiatives. And she has proved herself to be adept in an increasingly broad range of complex operational responsibilities.

"I am very excited to be leading our exceptional team of 12,000 Yahoo!'s around the world," Yang continued. "It's an honor and a great responsibility, and I look forward to the challenge. My immediate and overarching priorities are to realize Yahoo!'s strategic vision by accelerating execution, further strengthening our leadership team and fostering an even stronger culture of winning."

Bad Spock Drawings

Artists are asked to make bad drawings of the popular Star Trek character Mr Spock and contribute them to this blog - Bad Spock Drawings. Lotsa gems there like this one - a fat and cranky Spock in a tutu!

(Thanks Sir Thomas)

Ghost caught on Sitter Cam

Parents were worried about the new babysitter they hired so they hid a camera in their child's bedroom. When they checked the footage, they couldn't believe their eyes. View the video here. Booooooo.

7 reasons why you took so long in the toilet

P05-06-07_19.38

I took this photo of a funny sign in the toilet of a cozy pub at Liang Seah Street, near Bugis Junction. Number 4 would have been really something aye. Imagine if it's true and you had to call for help.

Singapore is 14th most expensive city to live in

Vodka might be dirt cheap in Moscow but everything else is expensive. The Russian city has been named the world’s most expensive city for expatriates for the second consecutive year, according to the latest Cost of Living Survey from Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Singapore is at number 14, up three places and my favourite city, Sydney is at 21. From Mercer:
Mercer's annual Cost of Living Survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. It is the world’s most comprehensive cost of living survey and is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.
At the rate we are going, I'm not surprised if Singapore reaches top 10 within two years. The top 10 most expensive cities are: Moscow, London, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Geneva, Osaka, Zurich and Oslo.

Carhenge - like the Stonehenge but with cars

carhenge2

I think Carhenge is an amazing creation that replicates the world's famous Stonehenge. Located in western Nebraska, it consists of the circle of cars, 3 standing trilithons within the circle, the heel stone, slaughter stone, and 2 station stones, and the Aubrey circle.

carhenge1

To make the Carhenge, 38 automobiles were placed to assume the same proportions as Stonehenge with the circle measuring approximately 96 feet in diameter. Some vehicles are held upright in pits five feet deep, trunk end down, while those that are placed to form the arches were welded in place. They were all given a gray spray paint job.

Tiny Pocket People

Tiny Pocket People creates unique, personalized dolls from a digital photograph. Send them your pic and they will digitally cutout and retouch the picture, then transfer it to fabric using digital technology and finally assemble the doll. Cool! And they ship worldwide! I'm thinking of ordering a few IZ Reloaded dolls. I think they will make great gifts for friends, fellow bloggers and my dear readers.

FCUK Transformers Movie Clothes

You know Transformers is going to be really big this year when UK clothing company FCUK includes them in their 2007 summer clothing line. There's a Transformers Sweat, Transformers Tee and Camo Tee. I would expect the FCUK designers to come up with more interesting designs but I guess these will do. Hey they are FCUK aye!
